Virgo improves the thing at hand. Aquarius wants to know why the thing exists in that form at all and would rather replace the arrangement than patch it.
Both are analytical, both are unsentimental in the way they talk about difficulty, and both are far more stubborn than their reputations suggest. That similarity is misleading: at 150 degrees these two share no element, no cross and no border, so nothing about how the other reaches a conclusion is available by instinct.
What the quincunx produces here is a constant, low-grade mutual bafflement between two people who each consider themselves the reasonable one in the room.
Detail and system
Virgo's objection to Aquarius is that the grand redesign ignores how the work is actually done on a Tuesday. Aquarius's objection to Virgo is that endless small repairs keep a bad arrangement alive.
Both complaints are correct. In practice the pair produces better results than either alone, and spends a great deal of energy establishing that fact repeatedly.
The angle between Virgo and Aquarius
Virgo and Aquarius stand 150° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Quincunx. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.
Earth and Air are the classically awkward elements: what one of them treats as obvious, the other has to be talked into.
Mutable and Fixed are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.
The pair has two rulers, Mercury and Uranus, and each side reads the relationship through its own.
Where this pair rubs
The rub is that Aquarius dismisses the small thing and Virgo lives there. A misplaced detail is not trivial to Virgo; it is where the error will eventually come from. Being told it does not matter is the single most reliable way to get Virgo to withdraw cooperation.
From the other side, Virgo's insistence on the specific reads to Aquarius as a refusal to engage with the actual question, which is why the pair can argue for an hour and afterwards be unable to say what it was about. Neither is being obtuse; they are simply not working at the same magnification.
Two forms of detachment
Neither of these two leads with feeling, which makes the early part of the relationship unusually calm and the later part harder to read.
Virgo's reserve is nervous — the feeling is there and stating it seems presumptuous. Aquarius's is principled — the feeling is there and does not seem to be the most useful thing in the room. Each mistakes the other's version for a lack of interest.
One adapts, one does not
Virgo adapts and Aquarius does not, which means the accommodation in this pairing is usually done by the same person.
Virgo does it willingly and keeps an accurate account, and produces it eventually with dates. Aquarius, who genuinely did not notice, finds the account both unfair and impossible to dispute.
Where they are strong
Anything that needs to be both correct and rethought. This pair is unusually good at taking a broken process and producing something better than either the old version or the fashionable replacement.
They are also good in the abstract: both enjoy an argument about how something should work, and neither takes it personally while it stays about the work.
Compare the real charts
A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.

Virgo and Aquarius: common questions
They are an odd pairing that works better than it should on paper. Both are analytical and neither is dramatic. What has to be built is a shared sense of scale, because one of them works at the level of the detail and the other at the level of the design.
Because a 150-degree angle gives them no shared element, cross or border to translate through. Each assumes the other is using the same method at a different volume, when in fact the methods have nothing in common. The assumption is polite enough to go uncorrected for years.
Less often than expected, since Virgo is not especially demonstrative either. The real difficulty is not coldness but unpredictability: Aquarius's attention arrives in bursts, and Virgo, who plans, finds that harder to accommodate than any amount of reserve.
Frequently, on anything that needs rebuilding rather than running. One questions the arrangement and the other makes the replacement survivable. The pair is much weaker on routine work, where Aquarius disengages and Virgo ends up doing all of it.
