Precision as a form of caring about the work

Errors present themselves to you. A colleague reads a page and gets the argument; you read the same page and the inconsistency on the third line is already flashing, before any judgement about whether it matters.

This is genuinely valuable and rarer than people assume. Most work is shipped with small faults nobody caught, and the person who catches them saves everyone a slow, expensive afternoon later.

The difficulty is social rather than technical. The reflex does not distinguish between a document that needs to be right and a story a friend is telling at dinner, and it arrives at the same speed in both. Corrected on a small point in the middle of their own anecdote, most people hear something other than helpfulness, however carefully the point was made.

Holding the observation and saying nothing feels physically uncomfortable, like leaving a tap running. It is still, in most rooms, the better trade — and the discomfort fades faster than the atmosphere does.

The question underneath your attention is what a piece of information is for. An elegant theory with no application is pleasant; a mediocre theory that fixes something tomorrow gets your time.

This makes you the person who reads the manual, finds the actual specification, and comes back with the answer while everyone else is still speculating. It also makes you a good translator: you can take a specialist's explanation and produce the version that a person with a deadline can act on, which is a skill most specialists do not have.

Where it narrows things is ambition. A large vague plan gets dismantled into tasks so fast that its size stops being visible, and the version that survives is the practical one — smaller, achievable, and occasionally smaller than it needed to be. The dismantling is the same instinct that makes you effective; it just does its work before anyone has decided how big the thing should be.

There is a point where checking stops improving the work. You can usually feel it and carry on anyway, because the alternative is releasing something that might still contain a fault with your name on it.

What keeps this in proportion is deciding in advance what finished looks like — the specific list, not a feeling of readiness, which never arrives. Mutable signs adjust without a natural stopping point, and adjustment with no stopping point is just work that has nowhere to end.

The other half is the difference between an error that costs something and an error that costs nothing. A misplaced hyphen in an internal note and a wrong figure in an invoice get the same alarm from your attention and deserve very different responses from you. Sorting faults by consequence is not lowering your standards; it is applying them where they actually pay.
