Libra and Aquarius recognise each other quickly, and what they recognise is a shared preoccupation with fairness. Neither can leave an unjust arrangement alone, and both would rather argue about a principle than about a personal grievance.

A 120-degree separation within one element hands the pair its sympathy ready-made: the same humour, the same distaste for coercion, the same willingness to talk something through at length.

The difference is where each starts. Libra begins with the people in front of them and asks what is fair here. Aquarius begins with the rule and asks whether it holds for everybody, including people neither of them will ever meet.

The angle between Libra and Aquarius

Libra and Aquarius stand 120° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Trine. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Both signs belong to one element: Air. The pair reacts to what happens the same way before a word is said about it.

Cardinal and Fixed are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.

The pair has two rulers, Venus and Uranus, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

Two theories of justice

Libra will bend a principle to spare somebody present. Aquarius will accept a cost to somebody present in order to keep the principle intact.

Each thinks the other is being slightly irresponsible. Aquarius sees favouritism; Libra sees a person being sacrificed to an abstraction. Both are describing something real about the other.

Who opens, who has decided

Libra opens the question and Aquarius has already settled it, which is the reverse of how the pair looks from outside.

Libra keeps weighing after the conversation ends, hoping for a better balance. Aquarius reached a position early and considers further discussion interesting but unlikely to change anything. Over years this can leave Libra feeling that the terms of the relationship were set once and never revisited.

The unemotional register

Neither of these two takes their own distress as a natural conversation topic, and both are relieved by that in the other.

So the pair discusses everything except how either of them is actually doing. It is comfortable, and it means a real difficulty can go unaddressed for a long time while both are enjoying the conversation.

Company and independence

Libra genuinely needs the other person present; a decision feels unfinished until it has been said to somebody. Aquarius needs the opposite and does not experience distance as a withdrawal of affection.

This is the practical difference that lasts. Libra will not usually say the need out loud, on the grounds that stating it would be a demand, so Aquarius does not know it is there.

Where this pair rubs

The rub is that Libra adjusts and Aquarius does not, and the adjusting is invisible to both of them for years. Libra accommodates because it keeps things pleasant and because giving way is not experienced as a loss at the time.

What accumulates is a relationship shaped almost entirely by one person's non-negotiables, arrived at without any coercion whatsoever. Aquarius is usually appalled to discover this, having assumed that stated principles from one side and silence from the other meant agreement. Libra, for the same reason, finds the complaint hard to make without it sounding like an accusation nobody has earned.

Compare the real charts

A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.
