The detachment here is unusual in having no injury behind it. Nothing was done to produce it, so it carries no resentment and does not soften when circumstances improve.

That makes for exceptionally clear judgement about a group you belong to, since your standing in it was never what you were protecting. It also makes ordinary belonging harder to feel from the inside than it looks from outside.

What it does not produce is indifference. Causes are taken up seriously here; it is the belonging that stays optional, not the commitment.

Connection here happens through shared interests, at scale, and across whatever distance is involved. What forms is a wide network of people who overlap with you on one specific thing, most of whom never meet each other.

That is a genuine social structure and it is not a substitute for the small kind. People with this placement often have a hundred real intellectual companions and one or two people who know what is actually going on with them, which works well until something goes wrong.

The correction is deliberate rather than natural: choosing two or three people and telling them things on a schedule, because the wide version will otherwise absorb all the available attention.

Conclusions arrive here well before the material that would justify them, and they are frequently right. The problem is timing rather than accuracy: the idea is presented to people who have no context for it, gets a bad reception, and is confirmed by events some years later when nobody remembers who said it.

What helps is patience with the interval, and a habit of writing things down when they occur, since the record turns out to matter more than the argument at the time.

Decisions here are made against a standard and not against loyalty, which produces integrity and a specific kind of hurt in the people around you.

A friend who expected an exception does not get one. The consistency is genuinely admirable and it is experienced, up close, as being weighed on the same scale as everybody else — which is precisely what it is.

What softens the effect is saying the standard out loud in advance. A friend who knows where the line is drawn takes its application far less personally than one who discovers it at the moment it applies to them.

Domicile means the function meets no resistance, so nothing here is dramatic. There is no rebellion to observe, no rupture, no visible break with convention: the unconventional position was simply held from the start and never presented as a position at all.

The cost of that ease is invisibility to yourself. A trait that costs nothing is hard to notice, and people with this placement routinely underestimate how differently they are seeing something until somebody tells them.
