Pride that cannot be corrected in public

The organising conviction here is that one's own life is a significant thing, and it does not require external confirmation to be held.

That produces genuine creative force. This is the position behind people who make large things without being asked to and without waiting to be qualified. It also produces a specific deafness: an arrangement that requires being ordinary for a while is experienced as an insult and is often left before it can pay off.

What is worth noticing is how little of this is about vanity. The centrality is structural, not decorative, and the person holding it usually cannot see it at all.

Criticism here is not weighed on its merits until the question of exposure has been settled. The same remark delivered privately is absorbed and delivered in front of others is repelled entirely, regardless of how accurate it was.

This is the single most useful thing to know about the position, and it is not a demand for special treatment. It is closer to a mechanical fact about where the material can enter.

What this does not mean is that the criticism is unwelcome. Delivered where nobody else can hear it, this position takes correction unusually well and acts on it fast, which is why the setting matters more here than the wording does.

The giving here is real, substantial and inclined to remain attached to the giver. Support is offered fully; what is difficult is the moment when the thing supported goes on without acknowledgement.

What looks like control from outside is usually something plainer: the contribution was experienced as part of the self, so its disappearance from the story is felt as a subtraction rather than as an oversight.

Collectively this is the cohort that put the individual at the centre of public life and never entirely accepted the older arrangement in which people were parts of something.

The gains are enormous and so is the bill. Personal freedom expanded and collective structures got treated as optional, and the two were the same movement seen from different ends. Nobody inside the period experienced this as a choice; it was simply what confidence looked like.

What the era got right is easy to forget from inside a later one: it established that an ordinary person's life is a subject worth taking seriously, which had not previously been obvious.

The hard passage in this placement is not failure, which can be dramatic and survivable. It is irrelevance: a stretch in which nothing is being asked of you and nobody is watching.

What comes out of it, in most cases, is the discovery that the making was never dependent on the audience, which is the one thing this position cannot learn while the audience is present.
