Why your opinions come with your name attached

Your positions are signed. You do not float suggestions anonymously and you do not pretend a proposal came from the group when it came from you.

This makes you unusually good at advocacy. An idea presented by you arrives with someone standing behind it, which is worth more in most rooms than an extra page of evidence would be.

It also raises the stakes on being wrong, since a rejected proposal is not experienced as a rejected proposal.

How something is said matters to you as much as what is said, and you are right more often than the dry-minded admit. A well-told version of a plan gets funded; the same plan in a bullet list dies quietly.

What you bring is timing, warmth and structure — the sense that a story is going somewhere. Even your emails have a shape.

Being contradicted in front of people costs more here than the substance warrants, and everyone in the room can see the cost.

The workable version is separating the idea from the authorship out loud, which sounds artificial for about a week and then stops being artificial. Leo is fixed, and what looks like pride digging in is often just the time it takes to move a position that has your name on it.

Privately, corrections land fine. It is the audience that turns a small factual point into a status question, and knowing that is most of the management.

In front of a client or a class this is a serious asset — attention follows you and stays. In a status meeting where four people are waiting, it is the thing colleagues mention afterwards, fondly and with a small edge.

The stereotype says this placement talks and does not listen. What actually happens is more selective: attention is generous when it is engaged and visibly absent when it is not, and the difference is legible across a table.

When you are interested, the person being listened to gets something rare — full, warm, undivided attention that makes them better at explaining themselves than they usually are.
