Where the need to be different meets the need to be seen

The originality here is genuine and it does not stay indoors. It appears in what gets worn, made, said publicly and defended — creative work with a signature on it, an opinion held partly because holding it separates you from a room.

The useful version produces real invention: performance, design, anything where a personal style is the product. The costly version turns into a position taken for its distance from the majority, which is a different thing from a position taken because it is true, and only the person holding it can tell which is happening. The distinction usually becomes clear in private, where the position has no audience and either continues to feel true or quietly stops mattering.

Resistance to being directed shows up here as a matter of dignity rather than principle. The instruction is not the problem; being managed in front of other people is.

That makes for somebody who works brilliantly with a leader who treats them as a peer and terribly with one who needs visible deference. It is worth choosing employers with this in mind, since the reaction is not really under conscious control and gets expensive in hierarchies that measure loyalty by tone.

Recognition given publicly has the reverse effect, and disproportionately so: a single acknowledgement in front of colleagues buys more cooperation here than a year of private encouragement.

Detriment marks a function working against the grain of the sign. The impulse to break with everything personal is operating inside the machinery that builds a personal identity, so the break keeps having to be performed by the very self it is supposedly breaking from.

The recognisable result is an independence that still needs an audience. Nothing about that is a defect; it does mean the freedom here is more social than it looks, and that solitude tests it more than opposition does.

It also explains the specific loneliness that can attach to this position, since an independence built to be seen has nothing to do when nobody is looking.

This placement takes chances with its own material. The unusual staging, the format nobody uses, the piece released before the audience is ready — the appetite for that is real and it is not calculated.

What follows is an uneven record: some of it works spectacularly and some of it does not survive contact with anybody outside the studio. People with this position tend to do best where a body of work can absorb the failures, and worst where every attempt is scored individually.

The other pattern worth naming is timing. Work made here often arrives slightly ahead of the audience for it, which looks like failure at the time and like foresight afterwards.
