When the persona becomes more vivid than the person

Creative capacity here is genuine and oddly conditional. The work comes easily in front of people and stalls in private, because the imagination is fed by the response and not only by the material.

That is not vanity. It is closer to how some people can only think out loud: the audience completes the circuit. The practical consequence is a body of work that exists in performances and rehearsals and almost never in finished, unwitnessed form.

Most people with this position eventually build a small standing audience of two or three, not for praise but for presence, having noticed that the difference between a finished piece and an abandoned one is usually whether anybody was expected to see it.

The recurring confusion in this placement is between being admired and being loved. They arrive through the same door, they feel similar on contact, and only one of them survives a bad week.

Someone with this position can be surrounded by delighted acquaintances and quietly starving, because the supply is abundant and the wrong kind. The disappointment that follows is usually blamed on the people, who were in fact giving exactly what was asked of them.

The distinction is easiest to see in bad conditions. Admiration is withdrawn when the performance stops; the other thing is indifferent to whether anything is being performed at all, and this position spends a long time discovering which of its relationships are which.

At collective scale this is the atmosphere in which fame stops being a description of visibility and becomes evidence of worth. Performers get treated as sources of meaning, images circulate ahead of any information about the people in them, and the whole arrangement feels natural to everyone inside it.

When the gilding comes off, the reaction is disproportionate to the offence, because what was disappointed was not an expectation about a person but a piece of faith. This is a generational weather pattern, and how any individual lives inside it depends on the rest of the chart and not on the position by itself.

What the same era does well is take imagination seriously as a public matter. Enormous creative confidence comes out of an atmosphere in which making something splendid is treated as a reasonable way to spend a life.
