Everything or nothing, with no version in between

There is no gradual version here. Somebody is outside, and then at a certain point they are entirely inside, with access to material nobody else has been given.

The transition is not earned by increments; it is decided. What follows a betrayal is equally undivided: the person returns to being outside, permanently, and the completeness of that is startling to everyone except the person doing it.

What this produces in practice is a very small circle and an unusual quality of loyalty inside it. Nobody with this position has a large number of people they would answer the phone to at three in the morning, and everybody in that group knows exactly where they stand.

Concealment here is not shame and not strategy. It is simply how information is held: what is known is kept, and disclosure is a deliberate act with a reason behind it.

This produces people who are told everything and volunteer almost nothing, and who are frequently surprised to learn that the asymmetry was noticed.

The cost lands on the people close by, who eventually notice that the exchange has been running one way for years. It is rarely resented at first, because the listening is genuine and the attention is real; it becomes a problem only when somebody wants to be trusted back.

The characteristic move of this position is ending something that has stopped functioning, well before anybody else is willing to say so out loud.

It is uncomfortable to watch and usually correct. What complicates it is that the same instinct arrives during ordinary bad patches, and a situation that needed six months of patience can get demolished in an afternoon with total conviction.

What separates the correct version from the premature one is almost never the judgement, which is sound. It is the interval between reaching the verdict and acting on it, and in this placement that interval is close to zero unless it has been deliberately installed.

Material that other people cannot stay in the room for is unremarkable here: illness, death, disgrace, the parts of a life nobody photographs.

This is the cohort that shows up when things are genuinely bad and does not flinch or manage the atmosphere. The same steadiness makes ordinary cheerful company feel thin, and this position often finds that its closest ties were formed in conditions nobody would choose.

Domicile means the function meets no friction, and friction is what usually supplies moderation. Nothing here suggests a smaller version of anything.

So the correction has to be built rather than felt. What people with this placement tend to arrive at, eventually, is a deliberate pause between the verdict and the action, which is the only place the missing brake can be installed.
