Two kinds of ambition that do not recognise each other

Leo and Capricorn both want to matter, and they measure it by entirely different evidence. Leo wants the response — the room, the acknowledgement, the sense that something was received. Capricorn wants the position, and would rather be relied upon than admired.

At 150 degrees the two hold a quincunx, the angle with nothing to translate through: no shared element, no shared cross, no border. Neither has any instinct for how the other arrives at a decision.

What they do have is stamina. Both take on responsibility without being asked, both work far past the point where anyone is watching, and both find people who avoid it slightly contemptible.

Where this pair rubs

The rub is warmth and its absence. Leo experiences Capricorn's reserve as coldness deliberately applied; Capricorn experiences Leo's need for response as a demand for something that should not be necessary between adults.

Under that is a difference about time. Leo wants the recognition now, while the thing is alive. Capricorn defers everything, including affection, on the grounds that there is a job in front of them.

Neither will convert. What works is a small, agreed, entirely artificial amount of stated approval from one side and a stated tolerance for delay from the other.

Recognition, withheld and needed

Capricorn does not praise readily, considering the standard to be a floor rather than an achievement. Leo needs praise the way other signs need sleep.

So the daily arrangement is that one is quietly satisfied and the other is quietly starving, and neither reads the situation correctly. Capricorn assumes the absence of criticism is obviously good news. Leo assumes silence is disappointment.

Status, two currencies

Both are conscious of standing, which they would each deny. Leo's version is warmth and visibility; Capricorn's is competence and position.

Each finds the other's currency slightly vulgar. Leo thinks Capricorn is joyless about success; Capricorn thinks Leo is performing rather than delivering. Both descriptions are wrong and both are recognisable.

Where the pair is formidable

In a shared enterprise this combination is genuinely strong. Capricorn builds the structure and holds the standard; Leo makes people want to be part of it.

Neither can do the other's job. A Capricorn business without a Leo is correct and unloved; a Leo enterprise without a Capricorn is exciting and badly run.

Who opens, who will not move

Capricorn opens and Leo holds, so the initiative usually sits on one side and the persistence on the other.

In an argument that means Capricorn will restructure the situation and Leo will simply refuse to move, and the restructuring keeps arriving at the same immovable point until somebody addresses what Leo actually wants.

The angle between Leo and Capricorn

Leo and Capricorn stand 150° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Quincunx. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Fire and Earth are the classically awkward elements: what one of them treats as obvious, the other has to be talked into.

Fixed and Cardinal are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.

The pair has two rulers, Sun and Saturn, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

Compare the real charts

A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.
