Cancer and Leo are both warm, and they are warm in opposite directions. Cancer's warmth is for a small number of people and gets stronger the fewer there are. Leo's expands with the size of the room.

These two are neighbours on the wheel, 30 degrees apart, and a semisextile is adjacency without kinship. No element in common, no cross in common, nothing at all that would let one of them guess how the other one works from the inside.

What they do share is that both take the household seriously, and neither would ever describe it as just a place to sleep.

The Saturday problem

Leo has invited eleven people. Cancer wanted the two of them and a film, and would have said so if asked.

Neither position is unreasonable and neither converts. What makes it a recurring difficulty rather than a solvable one is that both experience the other's preference as a comment on the relationship — Leo hears that Cancer does not want to celebrate anything, Cancer hears that the two of them alone are not enough.

The pair does well when the calendar is divided rather than argued: some occasions are Leo's, some evenings are nobody's, and neither has to justify their half.

The angle between Cancer and Leo

Cancer and Leo stand 30° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Semisextile. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Water and Fire are the classically awkward elements: what one of them treats as obvious, the other has to be talked into.

Cardinal and Fixed are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.

The pair has two rulers, Moon and Sun, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

Where this pair rubs

The rub is attention and what it is for. Leo needs it demonstrated, out loud, in front of others, and finds the need slightly embarrassing without being able to give it up. Cancer needs it undivided, at home, without an audience, and finds the public version faintly humiliating.

So the same evening leaves one of them fed and the other one empty, and neither is being neglected on purpose.

Underneath sits a difference about pride. Leo will not admit to being wounded and will announce being wronged. Cancer will not announce anything and will remember all of it. That combination can keep a small injury alive far longer than the original event deserved.

What each brings home

Cancer supplies the place Leo comes back to, and it is worth being precise about why that matters: Leo spends a great deal of energy outward and has nowhere to put the deflation afterwards.

Leo supplies the reason to leave the house. Cancer's world contracts by default, and Leo is one of the few signs who can pull someone out of that without it feeling like a criticism.

Two kinds of hurt

Leo is hurt in public and recovers in private; Cancer is hurt in private and recovers slowly, in company. So the timing is always slightly wrong.

Leo wants to talk about it immediately and loudly, then be over it. Cancer wants to say nothing for a day and be treated gently while not saying it. Each experiences the other's method as the wrong response to their own pain, and both are correct.

Compare the real charts

A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.
