Cancer and Capricorn are both looking after people, and they are doing it in currencies that do not convert. Cancer provides presence, attention, the sense that someone is watching over the household. Capricorn provides the structure it stands on: the income, the plan, the thing that will still be there in ten years.

The two face each other across the wheel at 180 degrees, and their elements support one another. Both are cardinal, so both take charge, and the argument between them is rarely about direction. It is about which kind of provision counts as showing up, and each of them has been quietly certain of the answer for years.

The angle between Cancer and Capricorn

Cancer and Capricorn stand 180° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Opposition. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Water and Earth are the classically supportive elements: each one gives the other what it does not produce on its own.

Both signs belong to the same cross: Cardinal. They meet a change on the same beat, and neither of them is the one who gives way first.

The pair has two rulers, Moon and Saturn, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

What the axis is about

An opposition is one subject split in half, with each sign holding an end. Here the subject is responsibility for other people.

Cancer holds the part that is felt: who needs what today, who has gone quiet, what makes a house somewhere you can be unwell in. Capricorn holds the part that is built: what the family owns, what it owes, and what happens if things go wrong.

Both are exhausting jobs and each is invisible to the person not doing it, which is the entire source of the pair's resentment.

The absent partner

Capricorn works late for the family and comes home to find that the working late is the complaint. This is genuinely bewildering from inside: the effort was the affection.

Cancer is not asking for less work in the abstract. Cancer is asking to be in the room, and cannot always say so without it sounding like an accusation of failure — which is the one thing Capricorn cannot hear calmly.

Warmth, unevenly distributed

Cancer's affection is constant and visible. Capricorn's is real, occasional, and often disguised as something practical: a repaired car, a paid bill, an arrangement quietly made.

The pair does well once Cancer learns to read the practical version as affection, and it does badly if that is the only version available.

Two people who do not stop

Neither of these two rests easily, and both regard the other's overwork as the problem while defending their own.

What is genuinely shared is a horror of letting people down. Both will keep an unreasonable promise to a family member long past the point of sense, and each is the only person who fully recognises that in the other.

Where this pair rubs

The rub is that both feel unappreciated for the same reason: each is doing the half the other cannot see. Cancer's labour leaves no receipts; Capricorn's produces nothing visible in the room.

Under that sits a difference about what is said out loud. Cancer needs the relationship described from time to time. Capricorn considers the arrangement itself to be the statement, and finds the request for words slightly redundant.

Neither position is defensible on its own, and the pairs that work tend to have agreed on a small, regular, faintly embarrassing ritual of saying the thing anyway.
