Leo and Pisces are both sentimental in a way neither admits to strangers, and it is the reason this improbable pairing keeps happening. Both believe in devotion, gestures and the significance of things, and both are quietly disappointed by people who do not.

Structurally they have nothing. At 150 degrees the quincunx gives no shared element, no shared cross and no border, so nothing about how the other one works can be guessed.

The difference is direction. Leo takes up space in the room and is comfortable being looked at; Pisces dissolves into the room and reappears somewhere else entirely, having noticed everything.

Visible and invisible

Leo announces a state of mind. Pisces does not, and often does not know what it is until later, which Leo experiences as being kept out.

It is not withholding. It is a genuine difference in how quickly a feeling becomes available in words, and Leo's pressure for an immediate answer makes it slower rather than faster.

The angle between Leo and Pisces

Leo and Pisces stand 150° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Quincunx. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Fire and Water are the classically awkward elements: what one of them treats as obvious, the other has to be talked into.

Fixed and Mutable are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.

The pair has two rulers, Sun and Neptune, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

Where this pair rubs

The rub is that Leo needs a response and Pisces retreats under pressure. The more urgently the answer is required, the further away it goes, and Leo experiences that as being abandoned mid-sentence.

The second rub is reliability. Pisces agrees in order to keep the peace and then does not do the thing, not from dishonesty but because the agreement was never real. Leo, who says what is meant, finds this the hardest thing about the pairing.

What helps is small and specific: fewer questions, more time, and an agreement that a slow answer is worth more than a fast one that will not hold.

The unstated preference

Pisces rarely states a preference, so Leo decides, and Leo decides confidently and generously and often wrongly.

Months later it emerges that Pisces did not want the holiday, the house or the friends, and had said so in a way that nobody could reasonably have been expected to notice. Leo is hurt to have been managed; Pisces is hurt to have been overridden. Both are describing the same event.

This pairing improves out of all recognition when Leo asks twice and waits, and when Pisces answers the question that was actually asked.

What Pisces gives

Pisces sees the person behind the performance, and Leo is more relieved by that than by any amount of applause. Very few people notice that Leo is tired, and Pisces notices immediately.

What Leo gives

Leo takes Pisces seriously in public, which almost nobody else does. The talent gets mentioned, the work gets shown, the shy person is brought into the conversation on purpose.

Pisces will protest about this and will not forget who did it.

A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.
