Why nothing here ever quite counts as clean enough

The characteristic experience is a standard that recedes as it is approached. The diet gets cleaner, the routine gets tighter, the list of things being avoided gets longer, and the sense of having arrived never turns up.

This happens because the goal was never a quantity. It is an atmosphere of being right, and atmospheres cannot be certified, so each achieved item reveals another one behind it. Behind Virgo stands Mercury, which supplies the sorting; Neptune supplies a criterion that no sorting can satisfy.

Seen from outside, the person is conspicuously careful. Seen from inside, they are perpetually behind on a standard that was never written down, and the discrepancy between those two views is the most reliable marker of this position.

Helping is the natural outlet here, and the help is real. What sits underneath it is a hope of redemption through usefulness: that enough of it, done well enough, will settle a debt nobody has itemised.

The tell is how the help ends. Where ordinary service stops when the task is done, this version keeps going until something else has been fixed, and the person being helped finds themselves quietly managing the helper's need to be helping.

None of that cancels the value of the work. This is the position behind a great deal of unglamorous care that nobody else was willing to do; the part worth watching is only whether stopping is possible once the task is finished.

This cohort reads the body as a text. Tiredness, unease and vague discomfort get treated as messages about how life is being lived, and the reading is sometimes accurate and frequently overproduced.

The caution here is practical: bodily complaints deserve an ordinary practical answer first, and a meaning afterwards if one still seems useful. The interpretive habit is worth keeping, and it works considerably better once the boring explanations have been ruled out.

At the scale of an era the same reflex builds a whole vocabulary of wellness, in which how a person feels becomes a statement about how they are living. Some of that vocabulary is precise and some of it is atmosphere wearing technical clothing.

Because the standard is imaginative and the sign is technical, finished work here gets inspected against a version that exists nowhere. Nothing looks adequate at close range, and the gap is experienced as evidence of incompetence.

Colleagues see the opposite: unusually careful, unusually thorough, slightly late. The discrepancy is so consistent that people with this position tend to end up relying on outside verdicts, having concluded from long experience that their own judgement of their own work is the least reliable instrument in the room.
