Why arriving somewhere never quite feels like arriving

The distinguishing feature here is not how much ambition there is, but what it has been asked to do. Reaching the position is expected to settle a private question: whether the effort was justified, whether the person is finally legitimate.

No external result answers an internal question, so the arrival is oddly flat. The promotion happens, the qualification is obtained, and the settlement does not come, which is usually interpreted as evidence that the target was too small.

The pattern is recognisable from outside as a series of achievements described by the person who obtained them as not really counting. It eases when the private question is named as a separate matter, since it was never going to be answered by a job title, and no job title is at fault.

At collective scale this is the cohort that invested belief in structures and then watched the structures behave like ordinary human arrangements. Companies, professions, governments and universities were treated as things that would hold, and their failures were experienced as betrayals rather than as ordinary institutional behaviour.

The disappointment is instructive and rarely proportional. Where an earlier generation might have expected a firm to be a firm, this one had asked it to be a home, and the shortfall registers as a moral event.

What comes out the other side, in most cases, is not cynicism but a more accurate relationship to organisations: useful, temporary, worth taking seriously without being trusted with anything that matters privately.

There is a timetable running here that was never written down. By a certain point one should have arrived, and the specifics are vague enough to be unreachable while remaining precise enough to be failed.

This is where the ordinary tiredness of the position comes from. Effort is being measured against an imaginary standard of where a serious life should be by now, and the standard has no author to negotiate with.

Writing it out plainly is the one thing that reliably deflates it. Most of what is on the list turns out to have been absorbed from somewhere else and kept without ever being examined.
