Watch this placement approach a physical task and the pattern is unmistakable: tools laid out, order established, the awkward part identified before it is reached. Force is not the resource being managed, waste is.

That produces real competence in anything with a procedure — surgery, editing, repair, analysis, training, any craft where the difference between adequate and excellent is a hundred small decisions. The research continues, the system gets refined, the equipment gets upgraded, and the actual attempt keeps not happening — all of it justified, because each individual improvement genuinely does make the eventual attempt better. What makes it hard to catch is that it looks exactly like work, feels exactly like work, and produces the fatigue of work. The tell is asking what would happen if you started now, badly. If the answer arrives with unusual force, the preparation was doing something other than preparing.
