Where commitment does the work that willpower does elsewhere

Most people treat fairness as a preference. Here it operates as an obligation with teeth: the unequal split gets corrected even when nobody would have noticed, the credit goes to whoever did the work, and the arrangement that quietly favours you is the one you flag.

That makes for an unusually trustworthy colleague and a slow one. Every decision affecting two people has to survive a test that a purely self-interested decision would not, and the test takes time nobody else in the room is spending.

The characteristic difficulty is telling apart what you want from what you agreed to. Both feel identical from the inside, because a promise here converts almost immediately into an intention, and the intention no longer remembers being borrowed. Years can pass inside an arrangement that was accepted rather than chosen, defended sincerely the whole time, with real energy spent on making it work. The question that unsticks it is unglamorous: if this could be ended today with nobody hurt and nothing owed, would it still be wanted?

Disagreement is not avoided here so much as formalised. The position gets stated carefully, the other side's good points get conceded honestly, and the argument stays on the merits, which is the only ground you find comfortable.

What unsettles people is the courtesy that does not move. Nothing in the tone suggests a fixed position, and the position is fixed, because it was reached by a standard and not by mood, and standards do not respond to being pushed against.

Leaving is the expensive act for this placement. Ending a marriage, a partnership or a working relationship registers as a broken structure, so departures happen late and after a long private accounting nobody else was shown.

The useful distinction is between the commitment and its terms. An agreement made by two people can also be revised by two people, and nothing about keeping your word requires the conditions to stay exactly what they were when neither party knew what they were signing up for.

Exaltation names a function operating at its cleanest, and here that means duty owed to somebody. Left alone with no counterpart, this placement is unremarkable at discipline — the gym goes unvisited, the private project stalls. Give it a client, a partner, a class of students or a co-signed obligation, and the reliability becomes close to absolute. It is worth building a working life around that fact instead of treating it as a defect in solitary willpower.
