Why the move you want to make waits for agreement

Alone, this drive is oddly quiet. The gym membership goes unused, the project stalls at the point where it needs one unilateral decision, and the whole thing looks like a motivation problem. Put a partner, a class, a client or a co-founder into the same situation and the energy is fully present, on time and better aimed than most.

That is not weakness of will, it is where the on switch lives. People with this placement waste years trying to become self-starting and get further in a month by arranging never to work alone.

Confrontation happens here in a reasonable voice. You argue in complete sentences, you concede the opponent's good points sincerely, and you are considerably harder to beat than someone shouting — because the argument stays on the merits and you are entirely comfortable there. The version of this that people find difficult is the smile that stays fixed while the position does not move at all. Underneath the courtesy there is a fixed idea of what is fair, and no amount of pleasantness in the delivery makes it negotiable.

Because direct complaint feels crude, small inequities get noted instead of raised.

The noting is quiet and remarkably accurate. Who took on the awkward task last time, who has been late twice, who says they will and does not — none of it gets said, and all of it gets kept, usually with the sincere intention of being reasonable about it.

What comes out later is therefore never proportionate to the incident that triggers it, and the other person receives a verdict on a case they did not know was being heard. Saying the small thing at the time is unpleasant for about a minute and prevents nearly all of this.

There is one situation where this placement fights without any hesitation at all: when the unfairness is happening to somebody else. Then the delay disappears, the voice gets firm, and the same person who could not ask for a raise will take on an institution on a colleague's behalf and win. It is the most reliable route to your own force, and it is worth knowing about, because it also explains why your own interests tend to sit at the bottom of the list until somebody else picks them up.
