Aries and Gemini are easy company almost immediately, and the ease is mostly about tempo. Neither makes the other wait, neither needs a subject introduced slowly, neither minds a change of topic, and neither is offended by an interruption.

The angle between them is 60 degrees — a sextile, which is the offer-shaped aspect: something is available here and nothing is compulsory. Fire and air feed each other, so conversation between these two accelerates rather than settles. What the pair has to supply on its own is anything that requires staying in one place, and Gemini is no better equipped for that than Aries is.

Where this pair rubs

The friction is not temperament, which is close enough to be comfortable. It is what a sentence is for. Aries says a thing to make it true. Gemini says a thing to find out whether it is true, out loud, in front of the person it concerns.

So Aries hears a position and answers it, and Gemini feels held to something that was still being tried on. From the other side, Gemini's revisions read to Aries as retreat, and Aries responds to retreat by pushing harder, which produces more revision.

Both of them are unusually quick to forgive, which conceals the pattern for a long time. The pair does better once each learns to mark which sentences are load-bearing.

Speed of decision, speed of thought

Aries is fast at deciding and Gemini is fast at reconsidering, and the pair spends years discovering that these are not the same talent. Aries reaches a conclusion in order to act on it, so the conclusion is a door closing. Gemini reaches a conclusion in order to see what it looks like, so the conclusion is a draft. When the two are aligned this produces an unusual amount of ground covered in an afternoon: one supplies momentum, the other supplies alternatives, and neither is precious about being wrong in public.

Where the pair is genuinely good

This combination handles novelty better than almost any other. A cancelled plan, a new city, a change of job — the things that other pairs experience as disruption are, for these two, the interesting part. Nobody has to be coaxed. Aries commits to the new thing without a discussion, Gemini finds the version of it that is actually workable, and the pair arrives somewhere neither would have reached in the same time alone.

What nobody is holding

Neither of these two is the person who remembers what was agreed. Aries assumes the decision stands because it was made; Gemini assumes it is open because the conversation continued.

So the pair loses things — appointments, arrangements, the third step of a plan that had a good first step — and both are surprised each time, since each was sure the other had it. This is the one place the combination reliably needs an external system rather than more goodwill.

The angle between Aries and Gemini

Aries and Gemini stand 60° apart on the zodiac wheel, and astrology calls that distance the Sextile. The angle never changes: it is the same for every pair of these two signs, whatever else the two charts hold.

Fire and Air are the classically supportive elements: each one gives the other what it does not produce on its own.

Cardinal and Mutable are two different speeds: one sets the pace, the other decides how long it lasts.

The pair has two rulers, Mars and Mercury, and each side reads the relationship through its own.

Compare the real charts

A Sun sign is only the outline. A synastry chart puts two full birth charts side by side — Moon, Venus, Mars and the houses — and shows where the two of you actually meet.
