The kind of abundance you can actually put your hands on

Progress registers here only when it is countable. A promising conversation, a strategic position, an improved reputation — none of it feels like progress until it has turned into something with a number or a weight attached. What makes it hard to notice is that every individual instance was reasonable, and that comfort is the reward this placement is genuinely organised around.

The honest version is that pleasure is not the problem and pace is: what expands here expands quietly, in both directions, and the standard of living tends to ratchet up without any decision ever having been made.

You give in things. The full table, the loan that was never mentioned again, the tool bought so a friend could borrow it, the money that arrived at exactly the moment somebody was too proud to ask. Very little of it comes with a speech attached, and people who grew up around this placement usually describe it in the same way: nobody talked much about generosity, and nobody ever went without.
